Skilled and Involved Youth

Four youth resource centers have been established to provide a “safe” place for young people to meet, exchange ideas, and plan and conduct activities. The resource centers offer computer and life skills training, library and information sharing services, and video and performing arts entertainment. Young women are trained as peer educators to provide reproductive health information to adolescent girls. In collaboration with the district health department, voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling and testing days are designated to insure confidentiality and youth- friendly services. Tools and supplies – sewing machines, welding tools, and hair dryers, mirrors, and scissors – are provided to youth successfully completing vocational training to help them start businesses or begin apprenticeships. “The world had forgotten me and I felt worthless. With my newly acquired skills and hair salon certificate, I can fend for myself.” Margret, age 17.
